Nearly a full decade before Ryan Hurst portrayed Harry “Opie” Winston in Sons of Anarchy, he portrayed Paratrooper Mandelsohn in in the 1998 movie, Saving Private Ryan. He co-starred alongside some pretty major names – Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Paul Giamatti – just to name a few. Saving Private Ryan smashed records at the box office, and was produced by the one and only Stephen Spielberg.
Paratrooper Mendelsohn was in the 101st Airborne Division, 506 Regiment, Company B. His unit has missed its drop zone by 20 miles, and instead has landed in a unidentified location, which the unit referred to as “Bumville”. On the way to their rally point, the unit encountered Mendelsohn’s friend, Private James Ryan, with a group attempting to defend a bridge along the Meredet River. Later on in the movie, the hearing in his right ear was damaged by the explosion of a German grenade, and Mandelsohn would relay information on Private Ryan’s whereabouts to Captain Miller of the 2nd Ranger Battalion.
