The internet has been abuzz with news and speculation regarding Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy spin-off, Mayans MC, since it was announced last week that FX has officially ordered the script for the new show. What we want to know now, is what are the chances that Jimmy Smits will reprise his role as Nero Padilla, the former Byz Lats (Byzantine Latinos) street gang leader. The Byz Lats originated in Kurt Sutter’s 2002 series The Shield, and were merely mentioned within Sons of Anarchy, particularly by Nero himself. Nero lead the Byz Latz for 25 years pre-Sons of Anarchy.
Nero’s backstory was told briefly within the Sons of Anarchy series, and was not at all explained within The Shield series, as Jimmy Smits was not even a cast member of that particular show. It would make sense for Sutter to expand upon Nero and his history, as he was a close ally to Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) and the Mayans MC, and the show is centered upon telling the story from the Latino perspective.
What we don’t know at this point, is how Nero came to be the leader of the Byz Lats, and how he formed a connection with Alvarez and the Mayans. How excited would you be if Sutter managed to intertwine Nero’s backstory with the California street gang into the new spin-off show? Have you wanted to learn more about Nero and how he settled into being the companionator?
Remember Nero by watching the Nero/Jax (Teller, Charlie Hunnam) car chase scene from Sons of Anarchy Season 5, when he out ran the One-Niners for Jax:
