Did you know that Ron Perlman was not the actor who was originally cast to portray Clay Morrow in FX’s outlaw motorcycle drama Sons of Anarchy? You read that right. There was once a different Clay Morrow, and he entire pilot episode of the series was filmed not with Ron as Clay, but with instead another extremely talented actor, Scott Glenn.
According to an exclusive interview that Ron Perlman did with Terry Gross of Fresh air, Scott, despite being a phenomenal actor in and of himself, didn’t quite resonate within the character of Clay as well as Sons of Anarchy producers had hoped he would. They had Ron audition, and were willing to re-film the pilot episode for “the right actor”. It’s not that Scott was bad, they just didn’t see him as the Clay they’d envisioned. To quote, Perlman said,
I did have to audition for [Sons of Anarchy]. They had already shot the pilot with another actor playing Clay Morrow. And the network decided that they weren’t getting what they were hoping to get and that they were willing to — they loved the series enough to — if they thought they found the right actor, they were willing to reshoot the pilot and start – restart the clock and green light the show for a whole first season, which is 13 episodes.
We’ve collected pictures of Scott Glenn for a special gallery today – take a look and tell us how different you think Sons of Anarchy would have been had he played Clay Morrow instead of Ron Perlman!
