‘Red Rose’ was Sons of Anarchy’s twelfth episode of the final season, the penultimate episode of the series. Gemma Teller-Morrow (Katey Sagal) finally meets her long-awaited fate. For some fans, it was crushing. For others, her death came with great relief. It goes without saying that Gemma deserved what she had coming to her.
Gemma was responsible for so much of the wrong-doings in Sons of Anarchy. Jax had come to realize, with the help of his son Abel, that Gemma had killed Tara; Jax’s only true love and the only mother his boys knew. Gemma had always gone to great lengths to get what she wanted; she was no angel and she knew it. She was responsible for the deaths of both of her late husbands, as well as several unnecessary deaths throughout Season 7. ‘Red Rose’ was her time to face the music and take consequence for her actions.
Jax had found Gemma hiding out at her father’s house with Wayne Unser (Dayton Callie), who had tried to convince Gemma to place herself under arrest, just so she could stay alive. Gemma knew it was her time, that Jax would find her, and she was at peace with the fact that she was going to die. She made sure Jax did not kill her inside the home, her one wish was that she would go outside, in the garden. After all, it was where she always found her peace. The roses in the garden were her mother’s, and we believe that being executed near them was Gemma’s way of dying alongside the good memories of her parents and childhood.
What we’ve learned from Gemma, is that the truth will always come out. Sometimes, the truth will also set you free. Do you think Jax made the right choice in killing his mother? Why or why not? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
